Monsoon and Salt Air: Choosing Windows for Cuddalore and the Coast

Coastal Tamil Nadu destroys the wrong window in five years. What to specify for salt air, driving rain and constant humidity.

Coastal Tamil Nadu destroys the wrong window in five years. What to specify for salt air, driving rain and constant humidity.

What the Coast Actually Does to a Window

Three things at once: salt-laden air that corrodes metal, driving rain that finds any gap in a seal, and constant humidity that swells timber and rots it from the joints. A window that survives inland Perambalur can fail in five years in Cuddalore.

That is not a reason to over-specify everything. It is a reason to get four specific decisions right.

Decision One: The Frame Material

On a coastal site this is not a close call. Aluminium pits and corrodes wherever the anodising is broken; steel fixings rust; timber swells and rots. uPVC does not corrode at all, and the galvanised steel reinforcement sits sealed inside the profile chamber where salt air never reaches it.

We would not quote aluminium for a house near Cuddalore, Chidambaram or Parangipettai even if asked.

Decision Two: The Opening Type

Casements and awnings seal better than sliders because the sash compresses onto the gasket rather than running past a brush strip. On the most exposed elevation — the one facing the sea breeze — we specify casements, and awnings where the room needs to ventilate during rain.

Sliders remain fine on sheltered elevations and internal courtyards. The mistake is putting a slider on the weather face because it was cheaper.

Decision Three: Drainage and Gaskets

Driving rain does not just fall on a window; it is pushed at it. Frames need drainage channels that route water back out to the outside face, and EPDM gaskets that stay elastic rather than brush seals that flatten.

On very exposed elevations we raise the threshold on doors and add a second drainage line. This is detail work that never shows in a photograph and decides whether your floor stays dry.

Decision Four: Glass and Hardware

Toughened glass on anything at door height, because coastal wind slams unrestrained sashes. Stainless friction stays and multi-point locking rather than mild steel hardware with a coating that will eventually break.

Get those four right and a uPVC window on the coast behaves like a uPVC window inland — which is the entire point.

Are uPVC windows good for coastal areas?

They are the best mainstream option. uPVC does not corrode in salt air, the steel reinforcement is galvanised and sealed inside the profile, and EPDM gaskets keep sealing where brush strips fail.

Which window type is best for heavy rain?

Casements for sealing, and awnings where you need to ventilate during a downpour — the top-hinged sash sheds water away from the opening.

Do uPVC windows leak in the monsoon?

Correctly fabricated and fitted, no. The frame carries drainage channels that take water back outside and the sash compresses onto gaskets on all four sides. Most monsoon leaks we are called to are old aluminium sliders or unsealed masonry.

What hardware should coastal homes specify?

Stainless friction stays and rollers, multi-point locking, and toughened glass at door height. Avoid coated mild steel hardware anywhere near the sea.
